Leadership Development Program

On joining, all students of the Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) at the SCHOOL OF INNOVATION & MANAGEMENT (SIM) go through the Leadership Development Program (LEAD). The three day LEAD programme at SIM is aimed at providing every student with an in-depth understanding of their strengths and areas of improvement so as to develop them into effective leaders.

During the LEAD program, the students are introduced to the ideas of leadership, derailment, personality, and emotional intelligence. The programme is designed such that it has a mix of training methods: classroom teaching, high fidelity business simulations and one-to-one coaching sessions. These methods are used to sensitise and develop essential skills for leadership such as effective listening and communication, presentation, team building, assertiveness and problem solving skills.

LEAD focuses on three key elements to foster learning:

  • Assessment to help students identify their strengths, and developmental needs
  • Challenges in the form of novel experiences to develop new capabilities
  • Support by study groups and larger SIM system to sustain the motivation for learning and growth.

The LEAD program allows students to :

  • Develop an awareness of the knowledge, skills, and attributes necessary to become effective leaders
  • Identify key interpersonal and teamwork skills in order to effectively manage teams
  • Leverage the diversity in experience by sharing feedback on their own and others’ interpersonal skills
  • Observe and practice selected interpersonal skills necessary for leadership and teamwork Develop personal and team action plans for success in the coming academic year.

SIM uses a validated personality assessment and a 360-degree (multi-rater) feedback assessment tool, which relies on carefully structured questionnaires to systematically collect opinions about a student’s personality and behaviour. At the start of the program, students are given an overall summary of the feedback they have received in terms of individualised reports. The feedback is used only for developmental purposes. Faculty coaches will encourage students to do the following:

  • Explore their feedback
  • Develop personal goals based on the feedback they have received
  • Develop a plan at SIM to strengthen their leadership capability

The program also focuses on the importance of team norms and teamwork to better leverage the diversity in expertise. A high fidelity business simulation exercise is used to gain insight into an individual’s behavioural tendency in a team environment. This game allows students to explore their team interactions and how it correlates with their business success in the game.

Post LEAD, students have the option to enroll in a variety of experiential skill-building workshops during the weekends over the first four terms. The themes of these workshops include:

  • Business Presentation, Business Writing & Speed Reading Skills
  • Technical Skills such as Excel, PPT etc
  • Project Management & Business Analytics
  • Primary research and survey development skill
  • Business and Social Etiquette

In addition to classroom learning, the curriculum integrates applied learning through practicum courses. The School provides avenues where you can apply your learning. The Post Graduate Programme is supported by the following learning interventions:

The PGP curriculum offers many electives to the students. You can choose electives keeping in mind your career aspirations and end goal. The Entrepreneurial Venture Programme (EVP) is a popular elective among students because it offers guidance on how you can start your own entrepreneurial venture.

It gives you an exciting introduction to the process and practice of entrepreneurship and new-venture creation. It is designed according to the latest entrepreneurial breakthroughs. Industry trends and market figures play a vital role in shaping the outlines of this elective.

The EVP elective is favoured by students because it :

  • helps you identify an entrepreneurial opportunity and prepare a business plan;
  • familiarises you with the process and practice of entrepreneurship and new-venture creation;
  • equips you with conceptual frameworks for evaluating the techno-commercial attractiveness in investing and launching a new venture; and
  • helps you understand and apply the techniques and processes used to prepare realistic business plans.

Faculty members at SIM often engage students to be part of their research. Faculty Initiated Research Project (FIRP) includes research projects that are designed and supervised by the faculty and completed within a short period of time. As part of this project, students participate in faculty research that leads to a mutual learning experience.

Only two students can work together on one FIRP under the guidance of :

  • a resident faculty member
  • a visiting faculty
  • a visiting scholar

It is a two-credit elective, which is counted towards graduation requirements (not Concentration Area requirements) and also considered in the GPA/CGPA calculations.

The Experiential Learning Programme (ELP) encourages you to work with the industry on real-world business issues. This gives you the chance to apply your learning outside a classroom setting and gain new perspectives on business and major global issues.

The Experiential Learning Program is a live consulting engagement undertaken by students as part of their elective curriculum. The initiative is designed to combine the diverse experience of the students and their deep domain expertise to offer increased value to clients. The key objective of the ELP is to provide students the opportunity to work directly with companies in real-time and gain additional hands-on experience. Exposure to cutting edge management research and theory further gives the students a more relevant perspective to real-world business issues.

Students participating in this program are required to prepare a consulting proposal for the client (scope of work, timeline etc.), make the necessary primary/secondary research and prepare a final report and present findings with recommendations to the client. Many companies also use this programme as their pre-recruitment exercise.

The Experiential Learning Programme has generated a tremendous response from both students and corporate communities. Since 2004, SIM students have engaged with over 450 companies across a wide range of industries and successfully completed close to 800+ assignments.

Examples of projects from previous years :

  • Building a strategic roadmap for a KPO to reach its full potential in the Indian Market
  • Landscaping an industry sector to provide driving themes for potential investment in the sector
  • Marketing Strategy for an online travel firm with a focus on adventure tourism
  • Evaluating investment opportunities in specific Tier 2/3/4 cities for expansion of the hospital chain
  • Developing marketing and distribution strategies to reach off-grid rural consumers for solar lighting
  • Developing digital marketing and business strategy for top three beverage brands of this firm
  • Marketing and Pricing strategy for a branded sports solution provider

ELP projects are always strategic in nature and focused on addressing live business issues of immediate relevance to the client. With guidance from a faculty advisor and industry experts, the student team comprising of 3 – 4 members works on the consulting assignment over a five month period from July to November, and is committed to putting in about 250-275 man-hours. Teams can travel for up to 10 days over the project period for field work. The ELP is a one-credit course for which the student team is graded by the client and faculty advisor.

ELP projects allow you to integrate concepts learnt during core terms and to apply your skills towards developing industry specific expertise. It gives students the chance to apply their learning outside the classroom setting and gain new perspectives on business issues. Through this program, students get the opportunity to complement their academic experience and get exposure to consulting skills and frameworks. In addition, students get to work in a team of members from different background and culture.

Students must form a team comprising four to five members and submit an Expression of Interest. The client who has sponsored the project selects team based on application and relevant work experience.

Successful completion of the ELP count towards the 1 credits (Term 6).

The ELP requires significant commitment over a five-month period of Term 3, 4 & 5. In addition to the regular weekly project and work schedules, students are required to travel to client office and make field visits, if required.

The client fee for participation is Rs.86,000 + Service Tax per project for Indian corporate entities or $5,000 for non-Indian corporate entities.

Costs associated with travel to the client office or field visits for students such as airfares, accommodation and related expenses are covered by SIM.

Further information about how to approach companies, form teams and the final selection process will be presented at a special info session during Term 1.

Fly Higher with SIM Exchange Programmes

At the SIM, we want students to gather a holistic and global approach. To facilitate this we have designed Inbound and Outbound Exchange Programmes. These programmes widen students’ perspectives and help them understand the dynamics of management in other countries.

The SIM has partnered with 44 leading schools from countries such as the U.S., France, South Africa, Israel, Germany, China, Pakistan, South Korea, Singapore and the U.K, Canada, Italy, Australia, Spain, Switzerland, Chile, Netherlands, Germany and Taiwan. Students from international schools visit the SIM campus, which adds to the diversity and peer-learning experience on campus.

The outbound exchange programme give SIM students an opportunity to spend time in other top B-schools worldwide. This programme helps students broaden their perspectives and form new connections.

First, define your goals for an easy selection :

  • Do you have a specific academic requirement or specialisation?
  • Do you wish to explore a particular market or related job opportunities?
  • Are you looking for a life enriching experience?
  • Do you want to visit exotic places/places you would otherwise not have the opportunity or the inclination to visit?
  • When do you want to go on exchange?
  • How much time would you like to spend abroad on exchange?
  • What is your maximum exchange budget?

Next, research the exchange options:

  • What types of courses are available?
  • What is the cost of living in that particular city? How will I arrange for sufficient funds?
  • What is the climate in the country?
  • Where and what kind of housing is available?
  • Is it easy to commute to and from the housing area?
  • Would I be comfortable with the cultural norms of the host university and country?

You can find the list of exchange schools and the links to their websites in the exchange network section. For any additional information, please contact the Student Engagement and Applied learning(SEAL).

These criteria are applicable both before and after selecting an exchange programme.

  • Free of any honour code violation
  • No ‘F’ grade in any course for any reason (such as academic performance or attendance)
  • SIM CGPA above 2.5

  • The Outbound Exchange Programme is treated as an individual course and students are selected based upon bidding
  • You can bid for upto three programmes although you can attend only one of them
  • Bidding timelines will be conveyed to you at the right time

No additional tuition fees are charged, however you are expected to meet your own travelling and living expenses (up to INR 3 lakhs for frugal spenders).

Any country you want to visit on exchange would require a Visa. They are required for all nationalities and the process usually takes 1-2 months from the time of application.

Access to placement services such as career counseling, resume help, mock interviews and recruiter access is provided on a reciprocal basis to incoming exchange students. For example, if your MBA programme provides career counseling but not recruiter access to SIM exchange students, the SIM will in turn provide access to career counseling but not recruiter access.

All exchange students are expected to be on their best behaviour and respect the rules and honour codes of both host and home institutions. Exchange students will receive the due number of credits.

SIM welcomes international exchange students to undertake two terms at the campus. This programme offers students new perspectives and a greater understanding of emerging economies.

The SCHOOL OF INNOVATION & MANAGEMENT (SIM) offers around 80 electives that help students build on their interests. During the last five terms, students can opt to take 18 to 21 elective credits. Term 4 is a cross over term, and will be a combination of mandatory core courses plus elective courses. Registration for the elective courses is through an online bidding process. • Finance
  • Information and Technology Management
  • Operations Management
